Spring is a breath of fresh air after a harsh winter, but to reap the full benefits, you’ll want to give your house a good sprucing. Although the task can seem epically overwhelming, it’s actually pretty easy if you have a solid plan. So take a deep breath and dive in. The sooner you finish, the sooner you get to go surfing.

Take Stock and Purge
Stuff piles up over the course of a year. From outgrown kids’ clothes to holiday gifts no one really wanted, your house is fit to burst with unused items. It’s easiest to list general categories and prepare to tackle each in order. Use whatever classifications make most sense to you: Old Clothes, Unwanted Gifts, Duplicate Items, etc. Focusing carefully on each of these divisions, make a pile of stuff to keep, stuff to trash or recycle, and stuff to donate or sell. Have a plan to dispose of unwanted items appropriately by the end of the same day so you don’t just end up with another heap of unaccomplished chores. It’s better to do something small completely than to attack too much at once and follow through with nothing.

Scrub Everything Down
If possible, work through your home one room at a time, leaving each space squeaky clean. If you have time to do one portion of your home each day, great. If it has to wait for the weekend, so be it. Design a schedule that makes sense for you. Again, it’s better to be slow and thorough than quick and slapdash. Although you’ll need to continue tidying up over the course of the season, this is your time to deep clean even the most isolated nooks and crannies.

Do Yearly Tasks
Wear and tear affects every part of your house. Now that you’ve determined what to keep and what to get rid of, you’re better able to see all the areas that need attention. Grab a paper and pen and take note of what needs to be done in each part of the house. Windows to wash, grout to seal, door frames to paint. This is the time of year to finish annual upkeep.

Find Storage Solutions That Work for You
It’s important to have things mostly cleaned up before you begin assessing your storage needs. As tempting as it is to motivate yourself by buying cute containers or new furniture first, you really can’t know what works for your space until you’ve assessed the space. If you’ll be making a big furniture purchase, look for high-quality pieces with plenty of hidden storage. You’ll feel great about how they look and you’ll love their clutter-minimizing properties.

Add Some Fun Details
Cleaning is a tough slog. If you need a little pick-me-up, reward yourself at the end with a decorative purchase that renews your excitement for the décor. Whether a beachy print or a colorful area rug, these items can help you pull all that hard work together making the results completely spectacular.
