Eddie Aikau

Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau

“Eddie would go.” Known to surfers and non-surfers alike, this phrase sums up the larger-than-life figure of “Eddie” Aikau. Born in 1946 on the island of Maui, Eddie later took up residence on Oahu, and became the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay. During the nine years he guarded the shores between Haleiwa and Sunset beaches, he attempted over five hundred rescues, losing not a single soul to the unforgiving, twenty-to-thirty foot North Shore surf. He was named Lifeguard of the Year in 1971. Several surfing awards, including the coveted top spot at the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1977, have got Eddie’s name on them.
