From green sand in Hawaii to star skeletons in Japan, this planet of ours is home to a lot of bizarre beaches. Spice up your next holiday in the sun by exploring one of these unusual destinations

Papakolea Beach, South Point, Ka’u, Hawaii
As a result of a generous helping of olivine, a mineral that erodes out of lava flows, the shores of Papakolea Beach have a decidedly unusual look to them. Because the olivine crystals are heavier than the other, lighter grains of sand, they tend to stay firmly in place while the others wash away. The result? A dazzlingly green stretch of sand.
