Black SandBeaches with black sand are almost always near a volcano. That sounds ominous until you think about the fact that most of the islands we visit on vacation are volcanic—Hawaii, Tahiti, St. Kitts.

The contrast between these and the white sand beaches we hear about most is visibly clear but it’s also easy to feel the difference. Black sand catches more sunlight making it far more important to remember your flip flops. It’s easy for a beautiful, sunny day at the beach to turn into a miserable day at the emergency room if your not careful. Black sand beaches are worth the risk though. They’re usually surrounded by lush vegetation and incredible views.
